Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin will attend the BRICS summit scheduled to be held in India later this year. The Russian news agency TASS reported this on Wednesday, citing Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov. Although official dates for the summit have not yet been finalized, a source indicated that it is likely to take place on September 12–13. Should Putin visit India, it would mark his second visit to the country within a year.

When did Vladimir Putin last visit India?

Russian President Vladimir Putin last visited India in December 2025. During that visit, he held talks with Prime Minister Modi during the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit, the primary objective of which was to strengthen bilateral cooperation.

The upcoming BRICS meeting will be the 18th gathering of this international alliance, which comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. In addition to these nations, several other countries participate in this international grouping as observers or new members.

Prior to this, Russian President Vladimir Putin visited New Delhi, India, on December 4–5, 2025, for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit. Following a welcome by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the visit reaffirmed the "Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership" between the two nations, focusing on strengthening economic ties, energy cooperation, and the defense sector—despite prevailing global pressures. This marked Putin's first visit to India since the commencement of the Ukraine war, underscoring India's commitment to strategic autonomy and its enduring relationship with Moscow.

Why is Putin's upcoming India visit significant?

Putin's upcoming visit holds special significance as it marks his second trip to India in less than a year. Prior to this, he visited India in December 2025, where he engaged in discussions with Prime Minister Modi on strengthening bilateral ties during the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit. That visit also held symbolic importance, marking the completion of 25 years of the India-Russia Strategic Partnership—an alliance that was initiated during Putin's first visit to India in the year 2000.

What is Expanding Scope and Influence of BRICS?

It is worth noting that BRICS is no longer merely a group of five nations; rather, it is undergoing rapid expansion. The bloc now comprises 11 member states: in addition to Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, it includes Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Indonesia. Furthermore, nations such as Belarus, Nigeria, Malaysia, and Vietnam have joined the group as partners.

This collective has emerged as a major platform for amplifying the voice of the Global South, serving as a forum for deliberating on issues such as economic cooperation, energy security, development, trade, and global governance reforms.
